According to the decision taken during the closing session of the 12th International Congress of Cretan Studies (25 September 2016), the organization of the 13th International Congress of Cretan Studies was entrusted to the Society of Cretan Historical Studies. The SCHS appointed the Congress Organizing Committee and sent out the First Circular of the Congress in July 2019, inviting an expression of interest from all those wishing to participate. The Congress was originally scheduled to take place in Agios Nikolaos in October 2021. Due to the global health situation, in December 2020 the Organizing Committee announced the postponement of the 13th ICCS by one year, to October 2022.

Based on the above, the 13th International Congress of Cretan Studies will be held in the town of Agios Nikolaos from Wednesday 5 to Sunday 9 October 2022, in partnership with the Municipality of Agios Nikolaos. The Congress will adopt a hybrid format and participants will be able to present their papers either in person in Agios Nikolaos or online via video conference.

The presentations will be divided into three sections corresponding to the three main periods of Cretan history:

  • Prehistory and Antiquity,
  • Byzantine and Venetian period,
  • Modern and Contemporary period.

The thematic axes of the Congress are:

  • Upheavals, Ruptures, Discontinuities, Risings, and
  • Health and Illness in Human Communities.

The approximate time limit for the content of presentations is set at the end of the 20th century.

Applicants are invited to submit an abstract of 300-500 words by email (13iccs@ekim.gr), by
28 February 2022
.

Proposals may include either oral or poster presentations or workshop presentations. For joint proposals for workshops, please submit an overall summary of 200-400 words and abstracts of 300-500 words for each separate presentation.

The thematic axes of the Congress are not obligatory in the case of poster presentation proposals.

The abstracts submitted should list the main issues addressed and the general research framework, highlighting the original aspects of the proposed contribution.

Only one proposal may be submitted per applicant, but there is no limit on the number of proposals in collaboration with others, as members of research team projects.

The languages of the Congress are Greek, English, French, German and Italian.

The acceptance or rejection of the submitted proposals, based on anonymous peer review, will be communicated by 30 April 2022.

Oral presentations should not exceed fifteen minutes (15΄) plus another five minutes (5΄) for discussion.

The Congress will include at least three plenary sessions with invited speakers to be announced shortly.

The participation fee for contributors is thirty (30) euros. Participation is free for postgraduate and PhD students, and unemployed scholars.

The Organizing Committee requests that those interested in participating in the Congress state, when submitting their proposal, their initial choice of presentation method, whether in person at the Congress venue in Agios Nikolaos or online via video conference. This statement is not binding and the Organizing Committee will ask participants to confirm their choice in early summer 2022.

The Organizing Committee also kindly requests that those who have already submitted an abstract (within the previous deadlines) email the Congress, (a) confirming their intention of participating in the 13th International Congress of Cretan Studies in October 2022, either with the same subject and the same abstract or submitting a new or amended subject and abstract, and (b) stating their initial chosen presentation method in the Congress, in person or remotely, as described above.

The Organizing Committee would like the 13th International Congress of Cretan Studies to be an opportunity for the scientific community to gather and meet once again, and encourages applicants to participate in person. The Congress venues will comply with all the health protocols, implementing all the necessary health measures such as room disinfection, obligatory use of face masks, and social distancing. For in-person presence at the 13th ICCS, all participants and attendees must certify, at the time of the Congress, that they are fully vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2. Vaccination certificates and identification papers will be checked upon arrival at every venue of the Congress.

The Proceedings of the 13th International Congress of Cretan Studies will be published shortly after the completion of the Congress, at least in digital format (similarly to the Proceedings of the 12th International Congress of Cretan Studies).
